Among The Living TonePrint by Scott Ian

Scott Ian is the one responsible for the awesome Anthrax riffs and his signature sound has been marked by TC gear ever since the early ’80s, so doing a TC TonePrint came only naturally. Scott Ian dialed in a wicked TonePrint for the Corona pedal and the result is a clean, smooth sound for the intro of the 1986 Among the Living single, just before the song gets ”super heavy”.

As a teenager, Scott Ian fell under the spell of rock band Kiss and took up the guitar. Later influenced by British heavy metal bands Iron Maiden, Motorhead and Judas Priest, Ian founded what was to become the legendary group Anthrax. The band went on to set standards in the thrash metal genre and was dubbed as one of the ’big four’ of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Megadeath and Slayer.

The group broke boundaries through their cover of Public Enemy’s Bring the Noise, merging metal with hip hop. This was a foundation for the rock/rap genre and Anthrax paved the way for bands like such bands as Rage Against the Machine, Linkin Park, Kid Rock, and Limp Bizkit.

Scott Ian is also known for establishing crossover thrash metal band Stormtroopers of Death, which was one of the first bands to fuse hardcore punk with thrash metal.

Currently, Scott is playing in both Anthrax and the group Pearl. He’s clearly a busy man and TC was lucky enough to catch him while preparing for a show and interview him about his work, his TC gear and what he’d like to have as a toneprint.

Being long time TC gear user, he was happy to dial his signature sound into a Corona Chorus TonePrint. Here’s what he had to say about it!

TC: You’ve been using TC stuff for a long long time, right? Scott Ian: I’ve been using TC since probably around ’82, ’83. I was using that booster distortion pedal when I first got my GCM800 back in ’82. The secret to my tone was that TC box.

TC: Were you using it more as a distortion or.. ? Scott Ian: Just as a boost, to boost the signal going into the amp. It gave it the edge and the low-end and everything I needed without it being too fuzzy. It sounded so much better. Plus it had the tone controls on it and you were really able to get specific with it. I also had the ParametricE2 as well which was also a part of my sound back then – I’d love to find one of those vintage ones!

TC: Talking about the Chorus TonePrint, what can ou tell us about it? Scott Ian: The tone is the sound I use for the intro for the song Among the Living - it’s the clean intro before it gets super fucking heavy. In reality, when we recorded that song back in 1986 I would have used a TC chorus on that actually. And that’s the chorus pedal I was using back then!
