TC: Who inspired you over the years when you were creating your own personal guitar tone?

Pat: It was like overnight that I decided that’s what I wanted to do. My parents where musicians, so music was always encouraged, but it wasn’t just a single guitarist as much as it was a band.

TC: What are the main ingredients in your tone in terms of effects (e.g. chorus, flanger, delay, etc.)?

Pat: I usually have at least two echoes, one doing quarters and one dotted, and some kind of modulation like a chorus or a vibrato - and I’m real excited about this vibrato pedal - and two or three overdrives.

TC: Which one pedal would you bring with you on a desert island?

Pat: Well, I think I’ve just found it (laughs). This Flashback delay is really impressive. It has the quarter notes, the dotted and the quarters and dotted right there on the preset. That’s smart, that’s super smart.

TC: Have you ever been so inspired by a tone you created that you ended up writing a tune based on that specific tone?

Pat: Oh sure...I think I might have done that with this Flashback pedal. But yeah, sounds can always inspire ideas. As a songwriter you tend to always be looking for little snippets. The right delay between a couple of chords can set the whole mood, and then you try to write a song around those couple of chords, or just write a riff or something. So yeah, it definitely can inspire ideas.

TC: Do you work on developing your tone continuously, or do you feel that you have found a fundamental tone that will last throughout your career?

Pat: It’s funny, because I’m really a basic old school player as far as tone goes, but yeah, I’m always changing around and looking for something I can use, something that’s different. However, I’m not flipping out like my tone sucks, I’m more looking for something that’s inspiring and different, as well as something that meets my needs as a guitarist, whatever I might need to have in my arsenal to do anything anybody asks me.

TC: Normally, do you prefer having access to many parameters, or do you like simple pedals with just a few knobs better?

Pat: I’m pretty simple. In the heat of battle you don’t need that many parameters when you’re performing. You need the right ones. You need to be able to turn a knob and go and make the pedal do what you want it to do, and usually that’s how I play, like it’s a live thing.

TC: How come you signed up for creating your own personal TonePrint(s)?

Pat: I wanted to play these really cool and intuitive pedals. When I went to the TC Electronic website and saw a couple of things of the Flashback pedal, and also on the Vibrato pedal, I was majorly inspired because they’re small pedals and I don’t have to open up a manual to learn how to operate one. I was pretty much sold when I saw the demo of the Flashback delay.
